Ruukki’s plants in Pärnu operate on 100% green energy

In 2021, Ruukki signed an electricity agreement in Estonia that brought green energy to Ruukki’s plants in Pärnu. The year 2022 will be the second year in which the plant will operate on electricity produced entirely from renewable resources.

According to Kristjan Keert, Director of Ruukki’s Baltic Business Unit, the use of electricity from completely renewable natural resources is part of Ruukki’s sustainability policy. “In terms of sustainability, we can make the biggest impact by reducing carbon emissions both in our product range and through the operations of our plants and offices. Green energy is one of the simplest and most convenient choices we can make on our journey to a more sustainable lifestyle.”

Even though steel is the only totally recyclable roofing material in the world, Ruukki plans to take it a step further by gradually shifting towards carbon-neutral production.

“As a company, we have committed to reducing the carbon footprint of our operations by 25% by 2026. Our ambition is to make our steel-based construction materials the best in every respect, and this includes environmental sustainability. Using green energy is an essential part of this plan,” explains Kristjan Keert.

Ruukki’s plants in Pärnu use approximately 1,350 MWh of electricity per year. “As a result, we will reduce the same amount of CO2 emissions in a year that a passenger car with an economical, EUR06 compliant one-liter engine would generate when travelling 90,000 times on the Pärnu-Tallinn route. This is equivalent to four people driving from Tallinn to Pärnu and back every day for 50 years,” Keert illustrates.
