Major drive at CeBIT 2003 Dramatic growth figures stimulate Swedish IT developments

Swedish companies, municipalities and regions

Hannover, Germany 12-19.3 2003

Hall 11 "Future Parc", stand number D24

Sweden and Swedish IT and telecom companies showed some highly impressive growth and development results for 2002 - at the same time as the growth climate in other countries and regions was particularly gloomy. One major contributory factory is the upswing - and in many respects the breakthrough - for practical, everyday use of the Internet. According to a survey conducted by Sweden's Central Statistics Office, SCB, virtually all the country's companies (92-100 % depending on company size) are today linked to the Internet. No less than 71 % of all Swedish companies today carry out their financial transactions over the Internet, and four of out of five have their own websites. Among private individuals, 68 % are connected to the Internet via personal computers that are now a regular feature in 75 % of all Swedish households. One result of this expanding computerisation is that the Internet has developed into the main source of information from public authorities to private citizens. It is the source from which 57 % of all Swedes nowadays obtain their information. This is the highest proportion in the world, according to British market survey specialists Taylor Nelson Sofres. Last year also saw a dramatic 40 % increase in e-trading among the country's mail order companies, according to the Swedish Association of Mail Order Companies - a result which indicates that initial scepticism has finally been overcome. Sweden's mail order companies report e-trade in excess of USD 100 million for 2002, with the expectation of continued strong growth. The figures for Swedish companies' total e-trade and EDI trade in 2002 are not yet fully collated, but in 2001 they accounted for about 8 % of total turnover, amounting to about 320 billion kronor, of which four-fifths stems from sales between companies. Sweden's growth rates and technological maturity have also attracted international players, who according to the 62-country Global Integration survey published in Foreign Policy Magazine, crowned Sweden as the top recipient of FDI (Foreign Direct Investments) per capita in 2002. And interest is not exactly set to decrease against the background that almost 500 companies last autumn competed over the EU's 20 prestigious "European IST Prizes" and were forced to concede that one-quarter of all the awards went to just one country - Sweden!

Linköping has a good business climate and is considered to be at the forefront, with the necessary preconditions for new innovations and entrepreneurship.

Today, Linköping is one of Sweden's most rapidly expanding cities. It is also one of two municipalities in the country with the highest number of engineers per capita.

This position is largely a result of the research done at the Technical University and at the Institute of Health Sciences, as well as the companies spun off from research activities, resulting in the creation of many high-tech companies. The fact that Saab is located in Linköping is another reason for the town being at the forefront in several areas. The region has world-class competence in a number of competence areas or so-called clusters.

During the 30s, airplane production started in Linköping. Saab contributed to the fact that a university was established. The university emphasizes on entrepreneurship and its cooperation with the business community.

There is also a technology park, Mjärdevi Science Park, where many of the companies that have spun off from research at the university are located. The park contains large international corporations as well as small one-person companies, and a business incubator for the supporting of new companies.

The clusters that have been identified as Linköping's strengths are aviation technology, electronics, software, life science and communication technology.
