Free-standing air cleaner in a table to improve the environment and increase hotel room occupancy

Airtable is the name of an air cleaner in the form of a table, that will improve the hotel room environment for both guests and staff. It does this by removing approximately 90% of tobacco smoke and particles from the room through a specially-designed filter. Apart from leading to increased room occupancy, the manufacturer claims that satisfied guests will spread goodwill, whilst room cleaning time is reduced.

"Rooms become more attractive when the guests know that they are equipped with efficient air cleaning. We calculate that an increase in occupancy rate of about 2% would be enough to pay for the cost of the air cleaner. On average that means 7 more nights in a year," says Jan Hemberg, the designer, and Airtable AB company chairman.

The table-type air cleaner has a low sound level (30 dB), which is quieter than a normal whisper. Despite this, it is claimed to have a throughput of 220 cubic metres of air per hour. A recent Swedish hotel survey reported that 95% of those asked had experienced improved air quality in rooms where the Airtable had been used.

The Airtable is also expected to benefit hotel staff. A special "Turbo" button quadruples the Airtable's capacity. This permits rapid removal of, for example, tobacco smoke.

"We have many chambermaids who don't smoke," explains Gunilla Strömbladh, who is responsible for the housekeepers of the Scandic Hotel chain in Sweden. By putting the table in rooms for smokers the air has become much cleaner and the chambermaids now have better working conditions.

The table is available in a number of different designs and colours: mahogany, cherry, natural or white-painted beech. It is 573 mm high, 535 mm in diameter and weighs about 11 kg. The filter only needs to be changed once or twice a year, at a cost of about USD 50 each time. Electricity costs are said to amount to USD 4 per year.

The first tables have been installed in, among others, several Scandic Hotels and Radisson SAS Hotels around Sweden.
