Company Profile

Business Areas
The company specialises in the development and sales of X-ray equipment for medical and dental imaging world-wide.

Product areas
Operations include three separate market sectors related to X-ray imaging. For the dental field, the company has developed the Orthopantomograph range of panoramic X-ray imaging systems. With the growth of dental implant techniques, for example, Instrumentarium Imaging has developed new imaging tools to support the planning of such procedures.
In the medical field, it has developed a range of products used in mammography and breast screening. The latest in this family is the Delta 16 TACT, one of the first systems on the market to provide three dimensional
digital mammography.
Its third major product area is the c-arm, which is used to support surgeons during surgical procedures, in addition to related medical products.

Sales Organisation & Markets
The main markets for the company's products are in the US, Japan and Europe. Instrumentarium works through local partners in more than 50 countries and its own sales organisations in France, Italy and the USA.

Production
Production, including final assembly, is based at the company's headquarters in Tuusula, near Helsinki in Finland. In 1998, expansion of its production facilities at the site was begun.

Research & Development
The main focus of the company's development over the next few years will be in 3D digital imaging based on proprietary technology called TACT (Tuned-Aperture Computed Tomography). This widely patented technique opens up opportunities for new products and applications based on existing imaging equipment. It is a digitally-based 3D X-ray imaging technique designed to upgrade existing computer- based diagnostics systems to provide medical and dental practitioners with better, clearer and more accurate
imaging.
Instrumentarium commits at least 10 per cent of its annual sales to product development.
