Digital IR thermometer with remote sensor configuration sets new priceperformance standards

New infrared thermometers from U.S. company, Raytek Corporation, combine smart digital electronics and fiber optics for efficient operation in harsh environments. Reported by the company to offer the best price/performance standards currently available, the FA models in the Marathon Series have an overall range of 250 to 3000 C. Features include operating software with Windows programs for remote sensor configuration.

Each model comes with a 1 meter (or optionally longer) fiber optic cable connected to a dust and splash proof digital electronics package. Outputs are 4-20mA analog and RS485 digital. The Marathon range also includes two color thermometers for obstructed or obscured targets.
User defined temperature ranges and selectable signal conditioning for "peak hold," "valley hold,"and "averaging" are enabled through support software. A background compensation function reduces errors due to reflected energy from hotter surroundings. Windows programs allow remote sensor configuration, data acquisition and display, and data archiving.
Optical resolution is up to 100:1 (distance to target area ratio) and the fiber optic front-end which collects energy from the process is rated to 200 C. Up to 32 Marathon FA sensors can be installed on a single RS485 multidrop circuit for installation economy.
Remote operation
Glass and metal manufacturing often involves harsh measurement conditions. Flexible fiber optics can separate sensitive components from extreme temperatures, dust and electrical interference, and also overcome line-of-sight restrictions. Digital electronics eliminate electrical interference errors, improving measurement accuracy.
Metals industry experience
Raytek Online Products distributor in Malaysia and Singapore, Danny Ng of Sprint Engineering, has installed Marathon sensors at a customer's aluminum extrusion plant. He reports that, because temperatures are accurately monitored throughout the process, quick adjustments can be made to billet and container temperatures, as well as extrusion speed. This allows closer control of product hardness and tensile strength, reducing waste.
Raytek Corporation designs and manufactures noncontact, portable and fixed system infrared temperature measurement instruments. Headquartered in Santa Cruz, California, USA, the company has subsidiaries in Europe, Japan, China, Mexico and Brazil, and markets its products through distributors in over 45 countries worldwide, More product information is available on the company's web site at www.raytek.com.
