Dual-action anti-fog coating introduced for safety eyewear

Uvex Safety, a leading worldwide supplier of protective eyewear, has introduced a new anti-fog lens coating called uvextreme AF. The company reports that this highly effective coating is the first to combine the properties of both hydrophilic (water absorbing) and hydrophobic (water spreading) technologies.

The permanently bonded coating is designed to provide superior fog resistance, even under extreme temperature and humidity conditions.
In the new lens treatment, the hydrophilic properties activate first, absorbing moisture from the air and simultaneously releasing it back into the surrounding environment. This creates a hydrodynamic equilibrium. In situations where the hydrophilic element becomes saturated, the properties of the hydrophobic component take over. This optimizes visual acuity.
"It's the best of both worlds," explains Phil Johnson, vice president, Research and Development, Uvex Safety. "uvextreme AF retains all the anti-static, anti-scratch and anti-UV properties of our 4C+ hydrophilic coating. It also provides the next generation of anti-fog protection."
In addition to minimizing fogging and improving vision, the new coating is said to provide reduced attraction of dust and particles to minimize lens scratching as well as resistance to a wide range of chemicals. The coating was developed in response to fogging that occurs in instantaneous and extreme temperature changes such as movement from refrigerated environments to warmer areas or outdoor loading docks.
"This new fog-resistant technology answers the market's need to combine eye protection and clear vision under the most extreme conditions." says Rick Sustello, vice president, Marketing and Diversification, Uvex Safety.
The coating is now available on the company's newly released uvex bandit, uvex bandido and uvex astrospec 3000 eyewear.
According to the United States Eye Injury Registry, 17% of all eye injuries occur on the job. The U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that 60% of persons suffering on-the-job eye injuries are not wearing protective eyewear.
"Uvex Safety encourages workers to comply with regulations requiring eye protection by offering products that have a stylish appearance," said Sustello.
The company, a division of Bacou USA Safety, Inc., is an ISO 9001 certified manufacturer of safety eyewear, laser eyewear and welding helmets.
uvex, uvextreme, 4C+ and uvex astrospec 3000 are registered trademarks and uvex bandit and uvex bandido are trademarks of Uvex Safety, Inc.
