Power connectors are quick and easy to install

The SlipOver concept developed by ABB Kabeldon of Sweden, is aimed at simplifying and increasing the quality of jointing, connecting and terminating work for power cable systems.

Pol Peny, division manager and head of technology within ABB Kabeldon explains, "this concept is a cost-effective solution because so much of the work is already carried out in our factory. The product range is prefabricated, fully tested, and comes with fully integrated features such
as stress grading, sealing and insulation. The practical benefits are installation in seconds, safer performance small dimensions, no errors during installation and minimal waste."
In addition, this manufacturing process offers other advantages to the installer. It avoids the need for special tools or training or the use of gas. The SlipOver product can be installed in all types of environments and allows readjustment where necessary.

Comprehensive range
The range comprises three basic product types for XLPE/EPR MV cables: joint, termination and screened separable connector. The company offers complete kits that, as the name suggest, simply slip over the cables.
According to ABB Kabeldon this provides power distributors with a flexible, simple and reliable means of connecting electrical power cables. It has been designed for a range of users such as power utilities, industrial concerns to original equipment manufacturers such as switchgear and
transformer producers.
Made from a sophisticated soft rubber, the products have an integral active pressure. This means that they always hug the cable with a uniform pressure, even when cable diameters change because of varying load conditions. This pressure fit avoids the formation of airpockets and is an excellent seal against moisture.
This range has been developed and made within ABB Kabeldon's ISO 9001 quality certification programme. Plus, the family meets stringent safety and performance tests. Every joint and connector, for example, is subjected
to electrical tests before leaving the factory.
Inventory costs can be kept low as the range uses a minimum number of products to cover the broad range of power cable applications. For example, only eight joint dimensions are required for all 12-24 kV cables from 50-630 mm2. SlipOver terminations come in seven sizes for both indoor and outdoor use covering 12-36kV from 50 to 800mm2. Screened separable connectors are designed for 250A 400A and 630A to cope with all 12-24 kV cables from 25 to 300m2.
The company is part of the ABB group with a turnover of US$40 million and 200 employees at its Swedish headquarters.

Caption 2: A sophisticated injection moulding process results in simultaneous manufacture of all three layers in the SlipOver joint.

Caption 3: Every joint and connector is subjected to rigourous electrical tests on automated testing equipment before leaving the factory.
