New radio station system gives simultaneous control of all media

A whole radio station, from production to broadcasting and administration, can now be operated from a PC. This includes remote-controlled broadcasting.
Broadcast Media Server, as the system is known, has been developed by BCC (Broadcasting Control & Communication) of Stockholm, Sweden.

According to BCC, the software system BMS (Broadcast Media Server) for Windows, running on a PC, provides complete radio station control. This covers editing program features, compiling playlists, maintaining disk archives with music-selection and seek-functions, jingle insertion, as well as reporting and an invoicing base.
‘A whole day's broadcasting lists can be made up in a half-hour, customized for individual requirements in automatic, live impression, and program type', says BCC Sales Manager Fredrik Hörnell.
The system comes in three different versions for local, area, and national radio. It is already used by Swedish Broadcasting Corporation (SR) and Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK), where one of the world's first completely digital radio stations is operated by a staff of only five.
‘The BMS system is easy to use and very reliable', says NRK Station Manager Jörn Jensen. ‘It has helped this station become one of the leaders in this type of broadcasting'.

Easy to use
According to BCC, the system is the most flexible and easy-to-use station control system on the market.
‘A completely new and unique function is what we call multitask play, an editing and on air function that allows all equipment to be controlled and monitored in real time', enthuses Hörnell.
All types of media can be controlled, individually or simultaneously, including CD, hard-disk, digital tape, optical-magnetic disk, mini-disk, etc.
For optimum adaptation of broadcasting equipment, the company works with Sony, among others, but BMS can be used with sound systems from many different manufacturers.
The system will be demonstrated at the AES Exhibition, organized by the broadcasting industry's Audio Engineering Society, to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 11-14 May./ins

BMS Technical Data:
The system runs under Windows 3.x, 95, or NT. According to BCC, it provides simultaneous control of all media, 6-speed transfer from audio CD to hard disk, import and export between different systems.
Precise time control is possible via online connection to an atomic clock.
Perfect fades and crossfades, as well as control of digital and analog sound sources, mixer board and internal sound card. Service and upgrades can be carried out via modem. Storage is on CD-ROM or MO.
The system is ready for adaptation to forthcoming hardware in both PC and broadcasting.
