History
Nokia Multimedia Network Terminals has more than 20 years experience of marketing products for the satellite and cable market. Established in 1865, the Nokia group over the past decade has transformed itself from a broad industrial group into a focused telecommunications and electronics group.

Products
Nokia Multimedia Network Terminals products range from the latest digital multimedia network terminals for interactive services to analogue satellite receivers, decoders and antennas positioners for both business and the home.

It places an emphasis on high quality products that are easy to use and install. The company works closely with experts in Human Interface Technology who specialise in making sophisticated equipment easy to use when developing new equipment.

Organisation
Employing 600 people, Nokia Multimedia Network Terminals has production facilities in Motala in Sweden. Development resources for digital products are also sited in Finland.

Markets
About 80 per cent of total production is currently exported from Sweden with plans to increase exports as expansion continues. The company is currently setting up a number of wholly owned subsidiaries throughout Europe as part of its plans to take advantage in the growth of the market for satellite and terrestrial digital cable systems.

The company sells its products in a number of ways through distributor networks and OEMs (original equipment manufacturers).

Research and Development
The fact that digital television will take over increasingly from traditional analogue methods of transmission and reception opens up opportunities for Nokia. The group has expertise in digital transmission that offers a greater potential for new services such as interactive television and links to computer systems. Nokia's new systems are compatible with the current digital video broadcast standard known as MPEG 2/DVB.

Nokia Research Centre is a resource used by the Nokia Multimedia Network Terminals for development in digital signal requirements that will form the basis of future satellite receivers. Nokia operates specific R&D programmes in Europe, Asia/Pacific and the United States. In addition, Nokia actively participates in the design of European and world standards such as DAVIX, DVB and MPEG2.


International collaboration
Nokia Multimedia Network Terminals has become part of the
"Network Computer Consortium", a forum for international companies to discuss developments in computer technology - in order to be at the cutting edge of developments on the Internet. The aim is to integrate such technologies with Nokia's satellite receiver products.

Nokia has a number of strategic partnerships with high technology companies for joint development of systems and products where appropriate.

Environmental policy
Nokia is committed to an environmentally friendly policy for its products. This commitment relates both to packaging of goods, product materials and components as well as developing products that are low in power consumption.

Ownership
Nokia Network Terminals Division is part of Nokia,the international telecommunications group which has 32,000 employees in 45 countries and sales in 120 countries. Net sales in 1995 were USD 8400 million.

Nokia's shares are listed on the Helsinki, Stockholm, London, Paris, Frankfurt and New York stock exchanges.
