A packaging solution based on Stora Enso's Performa CTMP board developed for a Swedish cake manufacturer has won the internationally recognised Worldstar packaging award. The simple, yet practical design has met hygiene requirements and minimised packaging material costs.

Swedish cake manufacturer Mandelbageriet used PE-coated Performa White in a novel pack developed to launch its new range of single pack almond cakes for the retail market. Traditionally the company has sold to the catering industry. Its new product and associated pack has been successful and is now sold to major retail chains such as Burger King.
Performa CTMP was chosen as the packaging material for the 65g pack that was developed in close co-operation with packaging manufacturer Eson Pac and Mandelbageriet. The individual consumer pack functions as a tray and includes a fork under the lid.

Avoid unnecessary packaging
"We wanted to use packing material that withstands rough handling in the distribution chain, freezing and thawing. The product must not absorb undesired odours or tastes at any stage, as this would jeopardise the reputation of our new product," says Kent Ahlqvist, managing director of Mandelbageriet AB.
The company emphasises the need to avoid unnecessary packaging. Additional plastic wrappings are not required with Performa White. Also, the package is made of recyclable fibre based material which is appreciated by end users. As well as the Worldstar award, the pack won the Scandinavian Scanstar packaging prize following its launch last year.
The bakery industry is increasingly seeking simpler packaging solutions while reducing costs. The Performa CTMP range is estimated to offer savings of 10 to 20 per cent when compared to conventional packaging materials. The multi-layer board structure makes it possible to use lower grammage in packaging.
"The demand for Performa CTMP board has clearly increased among bakery companies in the Nordic countries, as many manufacturers have started to optimise raw material consumption in their packs," says Joakim Stockhaus, Sales Director of Stora Enso Scandinavia.
