Battery faces up to tough conditions

A new starter battery has been introduced to meet the needs of professional users who require a robust starting battery. Developed by Optima Batteries AB, the Grey Top has been introduced to suit the needs of users of small to mid-sizetractors and compactors.

This battery has been developed as a complement to the company's existing Red Top battery, which is already used in a number of markets for heavy duty operation. According to the company, the Grey Top offers the same design tailored to its target audience in industrial and other applications such as construction machines, plant equipment and farming at approximately 20 per cent lower cost.
A significant technical advance says Dr Julian Goy, Technology Specialist at the company, is V-tech which is being applied to both Red Top and Grey Top products within the company's Professional Starter Battery Family. He says
"Current tests show that this gives the products over 35 per cent increased resistance to vibration and 70 per cent better performance when compared to flat plate batteries tested at 5g."
"This all adds up to a battery that can deliver as high a current as conventional units, two times its size under exacting conditions," continue Dr Julian Goy.

Spiral cells
This starter battery employs the company's SpiralCell technology where spiral wound cells replace flat plates found in traditional lead acid batteries. This creates a robust, compact design that is said to offer high performance under tough conditions. In addition, the electrolyte is sealed in a closed system, contains few components and is reported to be maintenance-free and fully recyclable.
It is this technology that has helped to establish the company's name in high performance and professional applications. Its products are widely used in the motor sport, defence, marine and agricultural industries, for example. Optima Batteries AB has an established reputation in high performance battery technology. As part of the Gylling group, the company has production in the US, Aurora Colorado as well as a network of agents world-wide.
