Patented microwave-based ID-system ensures more flexible production for BMW and Volvo

Increased manufacturing flexibility, improved materials control, and more efficient inspection of finished vehicles -- these are the claims made by the Swedish company TagMaster AB for its patented microwave-based ID-system Confident. This system, which is being installed by, among others, BMW at its new American plant at Greenville, permits simultaneous non-contact identification of several moving objects at distances of up to four metres. The system is claimed to be the first microwave-based ID-system with lockable and addressable credit-card-format badges.

‘The rapid development of network and database technology has reduced the need to store large amounts of data on ID badges', says Staffan Gunnarsson, Managing Director of TagMaster AB at Stockholm. ‘The Confident system is based on over ten years' experience of identification using microwave technology and follows the trend towards small, cheap ID-badges with addressable memory'.
The system has been developed to be able to identify, simultaneously and with high reliability, a number of moving ID-badges. It is also claimed that the system is independent of the orientation of the badges, giving increased flexibility in production applications.
The patented ID-system, which is being manufactured in collaboration with a large Japanese electronics company, is based around a fast communications unit (WiseMan) with lockable and addressable ID-badges (ScriptTag). The system is claimed to be unaffected by dirt, damp, or electromagnetic interference, and can be used without problems through glass windows, plastics, clothing, packaging, etc.
The comms unit has a built-in antenna which can read ID badges at distance up to 4 m. It can also rapidly search an internal database for automatic process control. Built-in Doppler radar provides the additional facility for detection and warning of persons and other objects in motion without ID badges.
The ID-badges are factory marked with an 8-digit electronic code and can store a further 82 digits with encryption. They can be configured for various applications, such as high-speed readout or simultaneous reading of several ID-badges. The badges are waterproof, shock-resistant, and insensitive to UV radiation./ins
