A new approach to fan technology for withstanding severe conditions at a reasonable cost

ABB Ventilation has now introduced a completely new concept in respect of the design of axial fans; the paired blade "PF Twinblade". This new design is expected to set new standards for fan systems, not least in challenging conditions. The design leads to lower maintenance costs and retained efficiency for the whole life of the fan.

"Maintenance and repair of fan systems usually account for a significant part of their cost, especially in industrial environments. Conventional fan blades gradually lose their aerodynamic shape due to wear. Our new "TwinBlade" design permits the fan to retain its high level of efficiency for the whole of its operating life," says Håkan Bard, responsible for development in ABB Ventilation Products AB.

The new format, with paired blades, has been shown to have completely new characteristics when it comes to wear resistance, and also allows greater freedom in the choice of materials for the fan blades. It is now possible to limit the effects of wear and corrosion, even in extremely severe conditions. The fact that the blades keep their aerodynamic performance means that energy costs are reduced and maintenance costs fall dramatically.

Certain smoke emissions contain particles that cause severe erosion of fan blades. The resulting maintenance and repairs often lead to operational interruptions and halted production, quite often at considerable cost. It's in this area that ABB Ventilation wants, with its new TwinBlade technology, to create a completely new way of thinking about operational reliability and fan economics.

With half the usual number of components it is possible to obtain the same power as provided by a conventional fan. Since the design also presents new opportunities for choice of materials, with better resistance to high temperatures and greater wear resistance, there has been a great deal of interest from end users and engineers.

"We know for example that within the process and mining industries there is an overwhelming need for reliable fan systems capable of long and uninterrupted operation, and that can in addition tolerate tough conditions. With PF TwinBlade technology we have a design that meets these demanding needs for cost-effective and operationally reliable fans," continues Håkan Bard.

"PF TwinBlade" fans have been run with good results in a number of reference installations, and this design is now being launched world-wide.
