Combined instrument for resistivity SP and IP measurements
A light but robust instrument that can be used to measure resistivity and induced polarisation (IP) during prospecting — that is how the Swedish company ABEM Instrument AB describes the latest addition to its Terrameter range, the SAS 4000. The instrument makes it possible to distinguish between, among other things, clay and water, thus increasing the probability of identifying usable water sources. The company also claims that the instrument can be used for detecting leaks from waste deposits, as well as in geotechnical surveying and mineral prospecting.
The Terrameter SAS 4000 is a development of the company’s earlier resistivity meter, the well-known Terrameter SAS 300 C. A considerably larger processor and higher transmission efficiency gives the new instrument a wider range of application.‘Our new instrument has 20 times more output power, and 50 times more output current, which means that you don’t need a separate booster even when taking measurements at great depths’, says Mats Thörnelöf, Marketing Manager of ABEM Instrument AB of Stockholm. ‘Also, four-channel measurement lets you take several readings simultaneously, which makes fieldwork much more efficient’.
Compatibility
The instrument is claimed to be fully compatible with the company’s previous models and accessories, as well as with external transmitters. High memory capacity enables more than 30,000 measurements to be stored. During IP measurement, it is possible to vary the cycle period within a measurement cycle. The instrument is fitted with both serial (RS 232) and parallel (Centronics) ports for external data communication.
According to the company, the equipment is designed to guarantee high accessibility and reliability in the field. The instrument is water-resistant and has a robust, shock-resistant aluminium case. A large LCD screen and menu control using four multi-function knobs makes it simple to operate. Total weight, including internal batteries, is 6.5 kg./ins
