Arabian paper manufacturer first
to adopt new evaporation technology

Arab Paper Manufacturing Company has become the first company to invest in a full-scale evaporation plant for both effluent treatment and water purification at their production facility in Dammam, Saudi Arabia.
The patented evaporation technology recently developed by Finnish Hadwaco, a subsidiary of the multi-branch company Hackman, utilises a new type of polymeric heat transfer element which can operate in corrosive environments. Low energy consumption makes evaporation a feasible alternative for water purification and waste water treatment in various industries.

The delivery to Saudi Arabia comprises two prefabricated evaporation units including complete instrumentation and control systems. One line takes care of the effluent from the paper mill, while the other is used for the purification of salty ground water from a well. The total feed flow to the system is 1,242 t/day of which 1,200 t/day is returned to the paper manufacturing process after purification. The power consumption for the plant is only 8.5 kWh/t of purified water.
The Hadwaco concept is based on modular units which allow for easy expansion of an evaporation plant or for building a plant step-by-step according to clients' requirements.
In the evaporation process, the effluent stream is concentrated by vaporising the water content. The dry substances remain in the concentrate and the clean water can be returned to the plant as process water. Thanks to a low operating pressure, the water boils at 50-60 °C and polymeric materials can be used. In principle, the process operates like a heat pump, which means that the vapour pressure and temperature are increased by fans and the vapour is then reused as heat releasing medium in the same unit for further evaporation of the effluent. The concept for pulp and paper applications has been developed through extensive testing in Sweden and Finland.
According to Mr. Peter Koistinen at Hadwaco, the delivery to Arab Paper Manufacturing Company has demonstrated the global potential of the new evaporation technology. "This order was very important for our fledgling company. The plant is the first application of its kind in the paper industry and Hadwaco's first full-scale international delivery."
The delivery was executed on a turn-key basis and the client's only responsibility was to set up the foundation for the facility and provide for electricity and connections to the paper production process.
Although the pulp and paper industry is an important potential client for the new evaporation technology, Mr. Koistinen points out that several other types of industry can benefit from this purification process. Thanks to the modular design, the technology can also be used in larger plants than the one now delivered./ins
