Multi-channel IR temperature sensor reduces zoned process control cost

A novel, multi-channel, fiber optic infrared thermometer breaks new ground in zoned process heating measurements typical of glass manufacturing and induction heating of metal components. Mikron Instrument Co.'s M680 system combines up to 4 sensors in a single electronic package with expanded temperature ranges in the overall span 150 to 4000 C, and short wavelength sensitivity. According to the company, these features allow temperature measurement in multiple zones at lower cost than several discrete sensors, and over a greater part of the process cycle than previously possible.

Temperature measurement over the majority of the heating cycle is paramount in semiconductor wafer production which engendered the M680 design, but this capability, in conjunction with multi-channel fiber optic sensing, is relevant to a number of other industrial processes. Among them are induction heating, automated component assembly, vacuum melting, glass container and fiber manufacturing, and metal heat treatment and fabrication.
Glass fiber optics are applied in infrared, (IR) temperature measurement to overcome line of sight or process environment restrictions. Until now, glass fibers imposed limitations on the wave band of IR that could be used, which, in turn, restricted the temperature measuring range to the upper regions of many process measurements. These limitations have been overcome in the M680 through the use of new, highly sensitive IR detectors with embedded electronic processors.
Other features of the M680 are fast response, (24 measurements per second), the ability to measure highly reflective surfaces, an RS232C bi-directional computer link, and automatic re-calibration when fiber optic cables are replaced. The instrument complies with the European CE rating.
