SECRETS OF A WINDOW UNVEILED

Spyglass, Sparklike’s new laser-based glass pane analyzer, is worthy of its name; just press the small device against any type of pane, push the button, and in a matter of seconds all the characteristics of the glass are shown on its large display.

The device handles all the different dimensions needed for analyzing flat glass, such as thickness and configuration of panes, and identifying coatings and PVB films.

“For example, when a broken window has to be replaced on very short notice, it can be hard to define on the spot exactly what kind of glass is needed,” says Erno Launo, managing director of Sparklike Ltd. “With Spyglass, you can instantly measure the exact characteristics of the broken glass and immediately order the right type.”

When sliding Spyglass over the surface of the pane, the device can also detect whether the glass is convex or concave, i.e., it can tell if the surface is curved.

“This is especially important for quality control, not only in the manufacturing industry but also in the field,” says Launo.

Graphical interface

In addition to showing plain numbers on the display, Spyglass can also show the structure of the measured glass graphically.

“Our aim was to make the device so simple to use that almost anyone could do the measurements,” says Launo. “There are no complex menus—you simply choose one of the four measuring functions, push the main button, and let our laser-based measuring technology handle the rest.”

Thanks to the device’s design, it is cost-effective to manufacture. The competitive price also makes it a good choice for entrepreneurs like glaziers.

“The device is easy to carry along, since it is battery operated and only slightly bigger and a little heavier than a smartphone.”

Sparklike in a spark

Sparklike was founded in 2000, when it licensed a technology developed at the University of Helsinki for measuring the gas fill level inside insulated glazing (IG) units without having to bore holes in the spacer of the IG unit or otherwise break it.

The device built on the technology was named Gasglass, and since 2001 Gasglass devices, both stationary and handheld, have been sold in more than 40 countries. The devices are mainly used by IG manufacturers and window and door manufacturers. Customers include all the biggest IG players around the world.
“Spyglass is a natural step for us, as we provide the glass industry with easy-to-use measuring devices for quality assurance and improved efficiency,” says Launo. /ins
