Unwire and Teligent to Collaborate on Positioning Services

The Swedish companies Unwire and Teligent today announce the start of a strategic product collaboration within mobile positioning services. The joint venture means that Teligent's P90/E telephone platform will provide the foundation for all orders integrated with Unwire's positioning server, EPAC. The partnership opens the way for new positioning based mobile telephone services.

The co-operation agreement immediately creates the opportunity for the development of new types of telephone services for mobile networks. EPAC technology makes it possible to track conventional telephones in existing networks with precision.
GSM positioning, in combination with telephone services, gives new opportunities for mobile operators. They can offer a considerable number of service options which exploit the terminal's position such as call re-routing, appropriate tariffs, emergency calls or which services are available at a particular location. A subscriber, for example, can find out
which police station is closest to his location and can be automatically connected to that number.
An example of a service is where you combine mobile and home telephone subscription simply employing the GSM network and the normal mobile phone. The customer has a mobile phone and the conversation to the home number is diverted there when the sub-scriber is at home. Outgoing conversations from the GSM telephone at home are charged at the normal local tariff. Outside the home, the mobile phone works as normal with the usual mobile number and tariff. Through this collaboration, it will be possible to split up the mobile networks into zones in such a way as to charge different tariffs, depending on location.
" By combining Unwire's leading technology for mobile positioning, it opens up further opportunities for us to deliver more and more exciting mobile telephone services," says Ulf Lindsten, Teligent's Managing Director and Chairman. "I am convinced that, in the future, we will see a huge variety of services based on positioning."
Previously Unwire has sold positioning services to companies such as Europolitan, a leading Swedish network operator. Currently a number of negotiations are underway with other operators and through such collaboration Unwire will gain market share and strengthen its position.
"The co-operation with Teligent is a new departure. It will even be possible to apply our technology with more traditional telephone services. This is different from our competitors in that we become part of the infrastructure. In principle, we have unlimited potential to develop novel and exciting services which combine positioning and telephone services,"
says Michael Wallon, one of Unwire's founders.
The announcement of this collaboration is taking place at the GSM World Congress in Cannes where most GSM operators and suppliers are participating.
