Hydraulic motors find application in the construction industry
Hydraulic drive systems are now being applied to road construction equipment. In one of the first applications of its type, Hägglunds Drives Compact motors are being used by Rabaud, a French road construction machinery manufacturer.
Rabaud has incorporated the Compact hydraulic motor into its Rotograde 6000 road construction machine. This equipment is used in road surface preparation prior to laying asphalt. Two CA 50 Compact motors from Hägglunds operate the 6 metre long rotor that drives the equipment which strips and prepares the road surface.
-In this application, power delivery and the ability to withstand high shock loads were important to the customer, says Ingemar Borg, Business Area Manager at Hägglunds Drives. In addition, he points out that the robust design and simple control are ideal for the tough environment encountered in road construction.
Much potential
Borg says that hydraulic drives could be of benefit in other related machines for road construction. Here, the system has to deliver full torque throughout the speed range for unlimited periods. The company is working with customers on a number of prototype systems in this area and believes that there is a potential for growth in this market sector.
The Compact motor has radial piston design, with a rotating shaft and stationary housing with few components resulting in a motor that is small and robust with low inertia. The speed is continuously variable from standstill to maximum and it can stop instantly. It also has the ability to free wheel and handle shock loads. It has been designed for easy installation and low maintenance, other important features useful in the construction environment.
Wide range
Five models in the Compact range will be available, the CA 50, 70, 100, 140 and 210. ( 50 Nm/bar etc.)The motors have a power to weight ratio of around 1.5-2.0 kW/kg(135-820 Hp/lb).
The company offers tailored solutions to each customer and has one of the largest laboratories of its type in Europe for the testing of new applications to support customers in their development of equipment and machinery.
Hägglunds Drives, one of the world leaders in heavy hydraulic drive systems, is part of the Swedish industrial group Atle AB. The company exports 80% of its hydraulic drive systems mainly to Europe, Asia and North America.
