Single unit combines slurry filtration and drying

Slurry drying traditionally has required two machines to achieve maximum moisture reduction. Now, U.S. Filter/JWI has introduced a one-stage process that can produce cake of up to 99% solids in a broad range of applications, the company reports. New, patented technology combines filtering with a vacuum evaporation cycle to achieve consistent, pre-selected moisture content with reduced handling costs.

The J-VAP process, which can be retrofitted to existing filter presses, efficiently removes liquids in slurries typical of many manufacturing industries. These include pulp and paper and pigment production, precious metals recovery, pharmaceutical, chemical and food processing.
In waste processing, the new technique is claimed to cut solids disposal costs through weight and volume reduction, and destroys pathogens by high temperature processing. Other features include clean and efficient cake release and a totally enclosed design for improved air quality and reduced emissions. The equipment can be powered by gas, electricity or waste heat.

Vacuum evaporation
The J-VAP machine cycles through an initial filtration stage which removes most of the free liquid. A second cycle combines hot water heating to 80 C with a vacuum draw down to create low boiling point evaporation. Pre-set timing of this cycle produces cake of desired dryness from 50% to 99% solids. Machine cycles can also include cake washing to remove unwanted components such as high chloride concentrations. The company has portable equipment for on-site testing and maintains a laboratory for application evaluation.
