Powerful laser printers make greater
demands on matching paper handling

The market for high-speed laser printers is increasing steadily and is currently undergoing a growth boom. This is due to a combination of lower prices and the flexibility and quality a laser printer offers. However, this does call for efficient paper handling. It took only a short time for Stralfors to become one of the market leaders in the paper handling sector, thanks to the Lasermax' products, which optimise the productivity of a laser printer and handle the paper - in cut sheet or roll form - from wholesaler to ready-to-post letter. One of the company’s biggest installations is at dvs, the computing centre of the German savings banks, where 1 500 000 pages of information are produced in seven hours every night.

Theoretically, a high-performance laser printer can handle up to 70 metres of paper a minute. Lasermax is a complete paper handling system which is unique when it comes to matching the speed of the printer at all stages from input to finished printouts in the form of letters in envelopes, for instance.
“With the Lasermax system, the printer can be run for five hours without a break. The cost per printed unit falls and availability can be raised significantly,” says Åke Franzén, Head of Marketing for Lasermax in Europe.
The system fully exploits the speed of the printer and does not need continuous manning. This can save up to 1000 man-hours a year. Special monitoring software optimises production and allows several printers to be controlled from one location. The software indicates if a fault occurs, where the fault is located and the nature of the fault. The system also uses barcodes to control all printouts.
Continuous operation subjects a printer to less wear than repeated stops and starts, and this keeps down servicing and maintenance costs.
The Lasermax system includes a range of microprocessor- based products such as an unwinder, a folder, a job separator, a rewinder, a cutter, a stacker, a colour printing station, a sorter, a plastic-wrapper and the MaxLaser 180, which sorts, buffers and delivers the print jobs after the job separator or plastic-wrapper. Some of these machines will be exhibited at the Cebit Fair in Hanover.
Lasermax systems are also installed at several large companies around the world, among others P.B.S in Denmark, Peugeot in France, the ABN Amro and RABO banks in the Netherlands, British Telecom in Great Britain and Volvo in Sweden. One of the largest installations is at dvs, the computing centre of the German savings banks, in Berlin and Leipzig. Here, more than 1.5 million pages of information are printed every day, and need to be handled and distributed. Currently the bank group has 16 Lasermax lines with complete paper handling including monitoring, folding, sorting, plasticwrapping and buffering.
Stralfors began to develop Lasermax in 1984 and since then more and more products have been added. The beginning of the 1990s saw the introduction of the Lasermax Management System, which makes it possible to control, direct and optimise the entire process. So in many cases a Lasermax installation can achieve an operational availability of 99 percent.
Stralfors has around 1300 employees and annual sales exceeding SEK 1.5 billion.
