New microdrive from ABB

A variable speed AC microdrive with the functions and communication facilities comparable to larger drives has been launched by ABB. Covering 0.37kW to 2.2kW, 200V to 480V, in single and three phase, the ACS 140 offers Modbus, serial communications, two relay outputs and two analogue inputs. Features include built-in PID control, flying start on a spinning load, seven application macros for fast programming and configuration and dynamic braking for accurate stopping.

Due to its high repeatability, the ACS 140 improves
end-product quality and output by controlling processes within narrow tolerances, says ABB. The inaccuracy in the microdrive's analogue input is less than 1%, giving accurate speed control and consistent performance.
For accurate process control, the microdrive responds in 9 milliseconds to input signals. There is little delay between the drive receiving an instruction and the motor shaft speed being adjusted. On cutting machines, for example, this precise control ensures the blade is in the correct position at the correct time and so reduces waste caused by inaccurate cutting of the metal or wood.
Mounting the ACS 140 can be in one of three ways: flange, panel or DIN rail. Flange mounting allows the drive to be installed with the heat sink outside the panel or machine. This enables more units to be packed into a smaller space and increases the reliability of the drive electronics by separating them from the heat generated.
Both single and three phase models, across all power ratings, are only 80mm wide, giving the ACS 140 one of the smallest footprints on the market.
No control panel is needed as many parameters are pre-set. For complex applications that need many parameters to be set, a small control panel is available which clips onto the front of the microdrive. Set-up times are cut for users of several ACS 140 units with the panel's parameter copy and paste facility.
