Advanced small frequency converter launched

A compact AC frequency converter, rated from 0.55 to 11 kW, and with a large number of features as standard, is launched by ABB.
This new frequency converter is expected to become the new workhorse for industry in applications such as packing and drilling machines, centrifuges, machine tools, pumps and fans.

Called the ACS 300, the drive features RFI filters for EMC compatibility and a fibre optic serial data interface. Eight different configurations for control connections are easily selectable, enabling advanced speed control by external control devices.
Two sets of parameters can be programmed independently, so that two separate motors can be driven with individual settings. This facility makes the ACS 300 particularly well suited for conveyors. Here, two sequential conveyors can be connected to it and the two parameters settings can be used to control each one independently.
Other features include PI-process control, flying start, automatic IR compensation, motor load supervision, and arameter lock to prevent unauthorised changing of parameters.
The removable, front mounted control panel can be installed outside of the frame and can also store parameters to be copied from one drive to the next. This facility is particularly useful to machine manufacturers.
The data interface enables connection to a fieldbus like Modbus and Profibus, giving greater control capabilities than hardwiring, as well as reduced cabling costs. The new frequency converter can be interfaced with fibre optic communication link to the more advanced ACS 600 to work in a "slave/master" configuration. In this way highly complex systems can be built as well as easy integration with automation systems.
The ACS 300 can tolerate an ambient temperature of +50 °C up to 10 °C above other frequency converters in its class. This means that it can be used in harsh industrial environments, without having to derate. This improves the overall reliability of the drive.
ACS 300 is available for 200-240 V and 380-480 V output voltage and is CE marked and UL listed.
