Portable paper machine analyser for on-line use

Portable paper machine
analyser for on-line use

A portable analyser for the measurement of paper making process variables and troubleshooting has been developed by the Finnish company Tapio Technologies. The device makes it possible to tune up the control equipment and control loops which normally results in significant improvements in paper quality.
The analyser, designated Proma, can also be used in connection with the Tapio PMA off-line analyser for analysing both short- and long-term variations in paper quality.

Typical signals to be measured by the Proma are consistency, headbox total pressure, surface levels, basis weight and control signals for various auxiliary equipment such as pumps and fans. Consultant Seppo Hanski of Sedamic Oy, Finland, who was the first paper machine specialist to fully utilise the benefits of the portable analyser, particularly points out the easy-to-use features of the analyser and the rapid results.
"The device can easily be transferred from one place to another and allows for fast working. Measurement data can be analysed on-site immediately and necessary measures taken. You can locate defective equipment and incorrect control signals on the spot. There is also the possibility to locate problems, which cannot be detected simply by analysing the paper."
As an example of the analyser benefits, Seppo Hanski mentions a paper producer in Finland, who had major problems with the headbox of a paper machine. The company already considered investing in a new headbox, but decided to try the Proma analyser first. Measurement results showed that the headbox just needed tuning and the considered investment worth some 20 million FIM could be postponed.
The analyser comprises eight input channels, which can be set to ±10 V or ±5 V, while the current input range is 0–20 mA. The device utilises three pre-set measurement band widths, which are 4, 40 and 400 Hz. External line noise and other high frequency disturbances are automatically filtered out by the Proma device. Measurement data is transferred to a PC through a 16 bit A/D converter.
The data is analysed on the PC containing both data collection software and analysis software. The software is basically the same as the Tapio PMA uses including the patented SOS (separate original signals) and other diagnostic features./ins
