Water in gable-top cartons - a growing aluminium-free packaging solution
Markedet for drikkevand er vokset markant i 90'erne. Det har resulteret i, at nye mærker er kommet til, og at emballagens smags- og aromastofegenskaber er blevet genstand for diskussion. Derfor er den skandinaviske mejerigigant Valio gået over til at bruge aluminiumsfri gavltop-emballage med Ensobarr-bestrygning til sit 1-liters sortiment af drikkevand.
"Det var vort mål at finde en aluminiumsfri karton til emballering af vand med de bedst mulige smags- og aromastofegenskaber. Vand er meget sart med hensyn til smags- og aromastoffer. Dertil kommer, at denne form for emballage kræver den højeste mulige hygiejniske standard," fortæller Pirjo Huhtala, produktchef i Valio.Efter en lang testperiode, besluttede Valio sig for den aluminiumsfri gavltop-karton med Ensobarr-bestrygning udviklet af Stora Enso Paperboards. Den nye bestrygning skal efter sigende give kartonen bedre beskyttelsesegenskaber end konventionelle plastikbaserede bestrygninger. Desuden skulle den være lige så effektiv som aluminiumsfolie.
"Udover vores virke i mejeribranchen, vil vi gerne fremhæve vores tilstedeværelse på markedet for drikkevand. Vi kan nemt emballere vand med vore eksisterende maskiner og levere vand emballeret i gavltop-kartoner gennem vor kølekæde. Derved sikrer vi, at vandprodukternes image til enhver tid forbliver højt," siger Pirjo Huhtala.
Emballageteknologiens nye ABC
"Det har i de seneste år været nødvendigt at genopfriske emballageteknologiens ABC, da der specielt fra forbrugernes side er stillet krav i den retning. Forbrugerne er yderst miljøbevidste, og derfor har vi bestræbt os på at være på forkant med udviklingen," udtaler Pirjo Huhtala. "Da genanvendelse af emballager med bestrygninger er lettere end emballager med aluminiumslaminat, er denne udvikling også i trit med vort miljøstyringsprogram."
Ensobarr-bestrygningen, som der er taget patent på i Europa og USA, består af tre lag. I følge Stora Enso kan bestrygningens egenskaber optimeres, så de opfylder nøjagtigt de krav, der stilles til den pågældende anvendelse. Både bestrygningens og kartonens tykkelse kan justeres. Bestrygningen kan være så tynd som 15 mikrometer uden, at det forringer emballagens egenskaber. Fons drikkevand er emballeret med Enso Natura karton, og Valio bruger også Ensobarr-bestrygningen til juice, sundhedsdrikke og yoghurt emballeret i gavltop-kartoner.
Valio er en af de 15 største mejeriproducenter i Europa. Udover mælkeproduktionen, der hovedsagelig finder sted i Finland, har Valio investeret kraftigt i nye forretningsområder og markeder i Europa, Asien og USA.

STORA ENSO PACKAGING BOARDS
The Packaging Board's division produces consumer packaging boards, corrugated boards and boxes, sack and kraft paper, coreboards, cores, fluting, laminating papers and impregnated films. Packaging boards are primarily used in the paper, packaging, food and other industrial sectors.
The division is headed by Pekka Laaksonen and the divisional head office is situated in Helsinki, Finland.
The Packaging Boards division comprises the business units Paperboards, Cartonboards, Containerboards & Kraft Papers as well as the subsidaries Pakenso, Corenso and Laminating Papers.
Niilo Pöyhönen will be in charge of the Paperboards business unit. The unit's mills are Imatra and Karhula in Finland and Skoghall in Sweden.
Ragnar Törner will be in charge of the Cartonboards business unit. The unit's mills are Baienfurt in Germany, Castellbisbal in Spain, Mölndal and Fors in Sweden, Newton Kyme in the United Kingdom and Ingerois and Pankakoski in Finland.
The Containerboards & Kraft Papers business unit will be headed by Pekka Suursalmi. The unit's mills are Gruvön in Sweden and Heinola in Finland.
