For cost reasons, infrared (IR) temperature measurement has until now been mainly confined to industrial applications. The launch of Raytek's MiniTemp pocket-sized thermometer puts affordable, convenient, noncontact temperature measurement into the hands of home users, maintenance professionals and industrial technicians. Priced comparably to hand power tools, it measures temperature in less than a second by sensing IR energy, and has literally hundreds of uses.

Two models
The MiniTemp MT2 has a -18 to 260 deg.C (0 to 500 deg.F) range with backlit digital display, and the MT4 model offers the addition of laser sighting for accurate aiming. Operating power for both is provided by a 9 volt alkaline or NiCd battery. Applications include checking food display and storage, heating and ventilating equipment, engines and machinery, electric fuse boxes and home appliances, where temperature variances can give an early indication of problems.
Infrared thermometers have a number of advantages over conventional sensors. They are faster and can measure from a distance, avoiding the danger from contact with overheated equipment and appliances, moving machinery and electrical power, making them well suited to professional, trade and home usage.
