Automatic tanking - Introduction UK
A fully-automatic refuelling system is today’s and tomorrow’s answer to yesterday’s manual filling stations. ‘In the past, people didn’t place as high a value on time-saving, environmental consciousness, or safety as we do today. Modern people demand a high standard of service. So these factors are the starting point for the development of the world’s first full-automatic refuelling system in service’, explained Anders Dahlquist, Marketing Manager of Autofill Europe AB. The Swedish technical development company is now launching the new refuelling system in various European countries. A German oil company has definitely decided to test the system and orders have already been received from several European oil companies, as well as from American Shell.
‘Now we’re sure! Increased vehicle ownership doesn’t mean that we think it’s fun to fill up’, concludes Anders Dahlquist after several market surveys.Motorists’ increasing disenchantment with manual refuelling provided Autofill AB’s business idea, which is now being launched on the British market.
Robot filler
For customers, automatic refuelling is simple. The only preparation required is fitting a new unexpensive filler-cap and a button that points the robot to the filler pipe.
When the time comes to fill up, the car is driven up to the automatic pump and the driver selects a method of payment. Autofill finds the filler, opens the cap, and fills up with the required amount of fuel. But behind this apparently simple procedure lies more than ten years of development work.
As the world’s demands changed over those ten years, development work was adapted to suit those changing needs. The result is, for example, that automatic filling is now environmentally conscious with minimal leakage of fuel vapour or drips from the filler hose. Not for nothing was the system developed in Sweden, the first country in Europe to require gas recirculation during refuelling.
Filling is between one and three minutes faster than with conventional pumps, the manufacturers claim. In Sweden, Autofill has been installed at one filling station near Stockholm since December 1996. Already, after just a few months, increased interest has been reported, and the technology is claimed to have worked better than expected.

‘News of automatic refuelling is spreading. In Sweden, automatic pumps with their advanced technology and ease of use have featured in a large number of news programmes and newspapers’, claims Anders Dahlquist.
